Meet the finalists—11 nominees for the RBL Fan Collection—drum roll please….

Originally posted on : Feb 15, 2011

These loving, passionate, and sometimes nutty submissions have been by far the most exciting, exasperating, strenuous, and grueling project so far in my career. What shocked me the most? 30% of our fans were inspired by sunsets and snowstorms from all over the world, 26% of our fans wanted the sunrise from all different situations and places, 17% of our fans were into peacock feathers and 16% of our fans jump with joy regarding all things bugs, butterflies and flowers. Then, of course, there were the 5% of technically impossible Goliath. Wait—let’s not forget the inspirations from pets and children—adorable, I might add. And for the halo situation requests, it is really expensive to produce and, as you know, we’re already scrutinized about our prices. (Although I have been studying it and have had some interesting quality time with it on mixing play dates…)

So, my editing process started like this: I narrowed down the percentages and was left with the unique individuals who stood out. Now please, do not be disenchanted or dismayed if your submission wasn’t chosen, as you all know that we need to produce a collective project, so I’m all ears (or is that eyes for our cyber world?!). You all know I love you guys and am here to serve you and to make you happy in nail polish heaven. We have fixed the voting process—there was a glitch the last time, so now the first three winners will get produced. If your color was selected, seriously consider contacting friends and foes, local barista or whoever might want to vote for your color. Start your own campaign immediately since we only have 48 hours to vote. For those of you who were not selected, if this project works out smoothly—I’m wiling to do this annually, because I heart all of you sillies!

P.S. Ironically, our summer collection was inspired by nature so we are obviously all tuned in with each other….

  1. From: DeborahI love shimmers (not glitters) and pearl….and I love shimmer that has that opalescent/pearl quality.I dislike frost. What I would love to see is a very saturated, almost neutral (as in not LOUDLY cool toned) pink that is midway between fuschia and magenta. This is hard because color names are so subjective. It would be VERY saturated and its tones would be red/purple. It would be creamy (not jelly-ish) and very opaque. It would have a pearl microshimmer (alot of it!) that was a light shade of green. Im thinking something close to a seafoam color but with out the dusty quality of seafom green….that tone- but brighter. So if you saw this womans nails from a few feet away, it would look like a deep, lucious, jewel toned shade of “redish purpleish magenta fuschia pink” that was pretty, not loud. And when you walked over to ask her to look at her nails you would notice the pretty green pearls of shimmer glowing from within the color.
  2. From: JaneI’ve attached a photo that shows several shades of perfect camel, from butterscotch to pale milky caramel. Not too brown, not too orange, not too pink-beige. Any of the shades in this photo would be dreamy……
  3. From SarahMy inspiration is Princess Leia from Return of the Jedi, specifically Leia slave outfit “the gold bikini” at the moment she takes out the evil Jabba the Hutt. Although the outfit was a symbol of shame and degradation, in this moment she was symbol of underestimated power waiting for the perfect moment to strike! I would want the color to be a dusty burgundy, similar to the fabric in her skirt, that flashed a dirty bronze-gold in the light to represent the metal bikini. In the past I have said I’d like this to be a foil (which were overdone last year). And it still could be… every foil I’ve seen come close to this has been too busy, too blingy, too bright. But with your Tudor collection I realized there is a different type of finish possible that would be much better suited for this color. If it could be a stone finish like Anne sort of was, but a dusty and subdued scarlet with a bronze-golden shimmer like stone that would be the perfect way to represent the sands of Tatoine. There could be green particle olive green particle shimmer as well to add interest and symbolize the destruction of the tyrant Jabba. The end result would be the perfect burgundy subdued stone-like shade waiting for that perfect ray of sun to show it’s true duo-chrome/shimmery glory!
  4. From: Kaydi-KatMy dream color was inspired by the BIRTHSTONE of my beautiful mom, LILY, who turned SIXTY in December 2010 (I swear, the older I get, the younger she seems!) VISUALIZE: A subdued TURQUOISE that can’t decide if it’s BLUE or GREEN because it LOVES being BOTH! Amidst the OPULENT base are hints of GOLD SHIMMER and PINK MICROGLITTER – giving this darling GEM a METALLIC IRIDESCENCE :) …. IMAGINE: Perhaps Mary Boleyn isn’t a member of the “REAL Housewives of the Tudor Dynasty” because she was only Henry VIII’s MISTRESS – but if ANNE’S SISTER had made the cut, THIS is the color she should have been!
  5. From: NicoleMy Dream Color-would be the color of a tarnished copper penny. Which doesn’t sound so glamourous at first glance. But for me, I have been searching for that perfect shade. I’ve seen some that have come close to being right, but most end up being too bright, to sparkly, too copper. That says “new penny” to me. I like older, slightly tarnished. My shade would be bronzy-brown, and would shimmer when it hit the right light. Copper micro sparkle, not glitter. It would be different and unique, like many of your colors are, but still totally wearable. That would be my ultimate shade, and I hope that I’ve at least intrigued you!
  6. From: DanielleEver since I lived in San Francisco I have been oddly fascinated and intrigued by a simple plant I saw every day – the succulent! They are so perfectly shaped like a flower and have the most beautiful variations of gray green, pink and violet with an almost translucent quality to them. In the morning with the dew on them I couldn’t help but occasionally give a gentle squeeze to one of the plump little leaves. Since then, my nail polish dream has been to find a light to medium grayed green like the color in the leaves where they begin to meet the center that is a creme but a little bit jelly-ish in formula with a subtle hint of pink, violet and silver micro shimmer.
  7. From: M. Faymysteriously orangey….two words….
  8. From: NoraNo one has gotten it quite right yet. I’ve been searching for a nail polish in Yves Klein’s signature color, International Klein Blue, for years. It’s an impossibly bright electric blue with a hint of blurple (based on synthetic ultramarine pigment). A jelly finish would be my dream, but the color may need opacity to retain its vibrance–it should never look black. Klein painted everything in IKB in the 1950s and 1960s–canvases, globes, models… and I would love to paint my nails with it now. The art world would go wild for it!
  9. From: Diane
Here’s my idea. A dark grey, with subtle pink shimmer. The base colour would be like the attached file.. and the pink would be like a candy floss pink shimmer :) Gosh, how beautiful does that sound?
  10. From: JoyMy inspiration is my passion for duochromes, and the “Johnny” filter of the iPhone “Hipsta” filter of the same name. I’m a graphic designer and fascinated too with Photoshop and how filters can completely transfer the mood of the original subject. The photo below is a simple photo of water and sky at dusk, see how much richer, vibrant and saturated it is using the “Johhny” filter
  11. From: Neeta
CuprumColor:royal blue creme with copper shimmerInspiration:I’m a chemistry student and one of the elements that has always fascinated me is copper. In its solid form, copper is the metallic reddish brown people associate with pennies and pipes. But in solution, the color of copper is suddenly transformed into a brilliant blue hue. The dual nature of this element is something I’ve always wanted to capture. A royal blue creme with flecks of copper shimmer would mimic undissolved copper fragments floating in a copper solution. I’ve attached a picture to show how complementary the two colors can look in combination.

  1. Amanda says:

Lots of brown or copper, which is kind of disappointing :/

looking forward to seeing who will win

  2. Christine says:

I want to SCREAM, these colors sound SO incredible!! (and the descriptions are so eloquent!) Cannot wait.

  3. Anna says:

Well, I’m confused. Are there 11 colors? or 12?

On my monitor, #5 has a description of Nicole’s color and #6 is just a picture of pennies, # 7 is Danielle.

    According to the results, though, Danielle’s # 6 ??

    FWIW, I’m using Firefox

  4. lia says:

It might just be my browser, but the numbering seems off- the copper penny picture gets a number when it’s part of #5 (Nicole’s), so the last one ends up being #12, not #11 like it should be.

  5. ame says:

Sadly, I am not interested in any of these so I will refrain from voting.

  6. Ji, I wanna vote for three!!! Please let us vote for three. Please?

  7. Hey Danielle #7, I think I frankened your dream color, cuz it’s very similar to mine!

  8. I’m not a copper girl either, but Yves Klein? Let’s just say I flew across the country to see the last exhibit of his work. Color to end all colors!

    • ji ji says:

Always wanted to make YKB and never had a chance….

      • Nora says:

I flew to Minneapolis (from LA) a few weeks ago to see the Yves Klein show too–I knew I’d have too many regrets if I’d missed it!

Thanks so much, Ji, for picking my entry and having the contest–I’m so excited and nervous seeing the votes come in! (I can’t imagine what you must go through when you launch things–it’s so nerve-wracking!)

    • Martha S says:

Saw his exhibit while we were in Washington DC this summer! That color IS fabulous!

    • Totally agree. I have a friend who is an art collector, and she has an acrylic table and that Yves Klein pigment is magnificent! I’ve seen so many things get so close, but are never on the money. I’d love to sport that color around!!

      XD

      • Leslie says:

if I could have voted for two, that YKB would have been it. I debated and debated for like, 5 minutes before picking my first choice. I seriously hope that is a chosen one so Ji can finally make time for it! :) This is so exciting!

  9. Kami says:

I was hoping for more blues or purples myself and I second the disappointment with the heavy brown/copper choices–especially because when Illamasqua did a fan competition, a copper penny theme won their contest so it doesn’t feel all that “unique” which is what I thought the goal was: http://www.scrangie.com/2010/06/sneak-preview-of-illamasqua-contest.html

Also, wouldn’t the Princess Leia one run into licensing issues?

But it sounds like there’s a lot of interest in shimmers and duochromes, so that’s good news! I also really liked how you broke everything down into percentages. That was really interesting to see!

    • ji ji says:

I have no idea about illamasqua and their contest, this took so much hours for me to read, re-read and edit…I can’t please everyone and I completely understand that many of you were, of course disappointed…maybe this was not a such great idea after all…

      • Kami says:

Please don’t be discouraged, Ji! I think it’s an incredible project and undertaking and after going through 700+ entries, they’re all bound to get overwhelming. I can’t even begin to imagine how you narrowed down from 56% sky/sunset/sunrise colors to just a singular one, let alone all the entries down to eleven. I’ve seen your comments that you’re maybe thinking about doing a sky collection and I would LOVE to see that (since I was one of the many that submitted a sunset, hahaha).

It’s a chance of a lifetime for the lucky three and we can only be envious after all. Maybe it’s presumptuous of me to say, but I’m confident that people’s disappointment at the color range isn’t a slight or lack of faith in your abilities. We’re all here because we adore you and what you do, your amazing skill and talent, your flawless grace and ingenuity, so please don’t lose sight of that.

I just think everyone had their own ideas of what was going to happen, so it’s impossible to work against that–after all, you can’t please everyone, right? The build up has been huge after all! And the uniqueness was stressed from the begining, so we all had our own expectations of grandeur beyond the limits of polish probably. I know I myself thought it would be maybe ten different colors of a wider range; purple, yellow, red, etc didn’t really get picked and yet the brown/caramel/copper were featured heavily. So combined with a natural aversion to the color set because it makes my skin look horrid (along with oranges/yellows/bronzes), yeah I was a bit bummed at that–but not at all with you or your ability to do something amazing with the final three. It’s just a personal preference.

I truly hope I didn’t upset, offend, or dishearten you. You’ve done an incredible thing with this and I can’t stress enough about your talent making whatever winners as beautiful as the emotions behind the entries.

        • Michelle N. says:

Don’t be sad, Ji! We love what you do and please don’t be discouraged! No matter who wins, I’m sure your vision and knowledge will make this a smashing success.

          Well said, Kami. :-)

          • ji ji says:

Thank you ladies, perhaps I see the visions in simple things and maybe copper tones had some strange pull for me–fabulous copper make-over…

  10. anna says:

i dont know why but these are not exciting to me for the most part. I was expecting something mind blowing.

  11. Sarah says:

I have to say, I’m kind of sad that mine wasn’t chosen. Even though I knew so many people had submitted theirs and my chance was slim, it still bums me out. Maybe it’s because I think mine was super unique and as much as I like some of these colors, I think a lot of them are bland.

Regardless, congratulations to those who were chosen.

  12. rescue rescue says:

The formatting should be fixed now.

  13. Eva says:

Ahh I hope danielle’s color is one of them that color would be goreous!!

  14. Lia says:

I don’t understand what Joy’s color is- could we get some more explanation?

    • ji ji says:

That’s what I LOVED about the entry, she leaved all to my imagination and the picture I thought captures the mood beautifully…

  15. maria says:

I love Neeta’s idea. I was a chem student too and would really, really love to see a something like a “chemistry set” or “periodic table of elements” collection. Colors could be named after their symbol or, like Neeta’s idea, with the full name for which the symbols stand. I’m already envisioning a smooth liquid metallic”Hg,” among others. I think rbl may be the only polish brand that could pull this off right.

  16. Nancy says:

Wow, the colors sound so beautiful! It was hard to choose. Will there only be one winner?

  17. Elodie says:

I considered voting for M. Fay because it was the closest to my entry, a pink-coral base with peach shimmer, but I ended up voting for Neeta, which I think would sound amazing on nails! Really nice selection to choose from! I can see these fitting it great with your polishes, Ji :)

    Good luck to all involved!

  18. Lauren says:

I admit I may just be bummed that mine wasn’t chosen, but I’m not excited about owning any of these. That being said, I’m sure once you work your magic I’ll feel differently. Most of them don’t seem original, especially the orange and camel! And Deborah is all over the place. Don’t get me wrong… you rock for doing this and I hope you’ll do it again next year! :-)

    • ji ji says:

It was extremely hard to pick one of the sunsets, sunrise, stones, orbits, bugs, feathers out of hundreds–does not mean it was not great, it fact some were fantastic! Maybe we should do a collective sky series….

      • Lauren says:

I don’t think I would have won anyway, since mine was a coffee bean brown shimmer. From the comments, people don’t seem to be big fans of brown. Purple and blue are usually my favorite colors for polish, but over the last year or so I feel like I own every shade of those I could ever want. My cravings for them have all been satisfied (mostly by you!).

  19. Teresa says:

I’m not too disappointed that mine wasn’t chosen, especially since there’s one here that captures my concept more eloquently and visually! That said, I wish I could have all of these; it was still hard to vote for just one. Congratulations to all!

  20. KayDiKat aka Naomi says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH JI FOR PICKING MINE! This is so much fun and so exciting. I just finally got to see the results (4 hours after you first opened the vote) and as I type mine is tied with Nora’s!!!

    I wish that I included a photo of my oh-so-lovely mom Lily… here’s a link for anyone curious: http://www.makeupalley.com/p~kaydikat

Can’t sleep til I find out!!! Hugs and Kisses ;)

    KayDi-Kat

    • ji ji says:

Congrats! sorry it’s too late to post the pictures and I was actually impressed that you did not submit a picture and still helped me imagine the color…GOOD LUCK!

  21. SA says:

Well, now I’m pretty damn happy mine wasn’t selected because I love every nominee here! I seriously don’t know which one to choose. My first inclination is to go with one of the two blues (birthstone color, favorite color) but Danielle and M. Fay’s intrigues me. Very very much. I’ve actually been looking for an orange just like that. Oh Ji, couldn’t you just do them all? :)

    Good luck to the 11!

  22. Delfina says:

I loved the beautiful duochrome imagined by Joy (mine too was a duochrome) and I can’t wait for your version of the chemical juxtaposition of blue and copper. Thanks for this contest. The whole process will be very exciting and lots of fun (well, maybe it’s not exactly the moment to tell YOU that:-))

  23. soaper1 says:

Great entries. Thanks for doing this. I can’t wait to see the winning polish.

  24. Danielle says:

Wow! What wonderful colors! I didn’t think about how hard it must be to describe a color that you see perfectly in your imagination ;) .

I was torn between Danielle and Kaydi-Kat, but Danielle’s sounds like a challenge – and I wanted to see what you could do with it :)

  25. Michy says:

While I am (of course) bummed that mine wasn’t selected, these sure seem like a worthy bunch! I just wish I could vote for more than one! I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to choose among all the entries! That said, I think the only one of these that isn’t my kind of color is the camel, and that’s just because I so so so very rarely find a neutral that I really like, but I know you, Ji, might just be able to convince me to wear one! Heck, even the tarnished copper penny sounds interesting in its own way.

I hope you 11 that made the cut are super excited!! Congo rats!

  26. Michelle N. says:

MUST HAVE LEIA POLISH. MUST HAVE IT NOW. :-D

Ji – you would sell SO many of these once the Girl Geek population found out. Speaking as one myself, I love the detailed thought process behind Sarah’s description, down to the green Jabba glitter. *sigh* I hope Leia gets chosen!

  27. Ann says:

Star Wars…right on! I’ve actually always loved the look of red shades layered with gold shimmer or glitter (plus I’m the biggest Star Wars nerd) so I’m going with Sarah! I do like most of the choices a lot, though! Awesome work Ji and contestants!

  28. The thought of submitting a color idea crossed my mind, but Nora’s color is along the same lines as what I was thinking only better! Good luck to the finalists!

  29. Kathryn says:

Oh How I hope KayDiKat an Danielle’s are two of the winners! They sound beautiful. Can you tell I like pastels? :)
Thank you for taking the time to do this contest.
    Good luck KayDiKat and Danielle!

  30. TygerKitty says:

OOOO right now my favorite three are the top three! How exciting! I’d be happy with any of them – danielle, neeta and nora!

  31. Teresa Olson says:

Ji all of these sound amazing and I wish I could have chosen more than one because there are 4-5 that I would ADORE to see you put your incredible magic spell on. I can’t wait to see the results of this!!

  32. Lili says:

First I want to say that Ji is awesome for even doing this, thank you thank you thank you for being so good to your clients and fans. Second, congrats to the finalists, these are some truly amazing ideas/inspirations. However, I’m a bit frustrated over the fact that two finalists didn’t even submit a picture with their entries. I thought those were the rules? I busted my behind tracking down the digital copy of my picture to make sure I followed the entry guidelines. I thought the point was to convey an inspiration, and that the pics would be the main thing focused on especially since entries were to be brief. Some of these are truly “inspired,” which is probably why they are ahead. Others are just convoluted descriptions of a dream nail polish color…I could’ve done a million of those…but that wasn’t the contest I joined.

    • KayDiKat says:

Hi there… Mine was one of the finalist who did not include a photo. I literally looked at over 50 different images of Turquoise stones and decided I’d rather enter without an image and allow my words to paint the picture in Ji’s (and voters) mind. One photo image was allowed but not required. If I could go back and submit a photo, it wouldn’t even be of a color, it would be of my beautiful mom. My entry is in honor of her and she truly is my inspiration. Corny, yes – but true :) Thanks again, Ji, for being able to VISUALIZE my color with your vivid imagination! Hopefully, many others can, too!

    • carina says:

i have to say that i agree w/ lili regarding people not following the criteria for submissions. i think this was a source of disappointment for me as well to be honest, given the fact that i also, gave a ton of thought about both my photo and “precise description”. 2 submissions didn’t include photos and one was simply a photo with NO description given for a color at all. i guess i just don’t get it. copied and pasted below are the criteria directly off of the original blog post:

“Submit your one color idea along with one picture of your inspiration; write a short, but precise paragraph describing your color (please be kind in word count, for I have to read everyone’s submission and you know I’ll be swamped!)”

i also agree w/ kami who said she had thought that there were be a wide variety of color range, which wasn’t actually the case. i think this was a very cool idea, and generally love love love RBL, but obviously, there were bound to be some left scratching their heads and when you open your door to public opinion, there’s going to be both positive & negative feedback.

      • ji ji says:

I actually posted on facebook that you do not have to submit a picture if they can convey what they want into words… You can double check going to the older posts…

  33. Angela says:

These color submissions sound great. Please don’t feel disheartened because of a few negative responses. They do not represent the whole. =) I am betting they will come around too when you do your special magic to these beauties. Hey maybe lack of a color they want will inspire them to submit future suggestions.

  34. Ulmiel says:

Personally I really love two of them and I think that having three in the collection, that is enough! I’m sorry you’re getting negative feedback on this, I can imagine how hard it must be to choose the nominees and I’d hate you to feel like you made a mistake with the project! I think it’s a fabulous idea, and would still do even if i wouldn’t like any of them. Colours are such a subjective part of the nail polish, once just couldn’t expect to like ALL the nominees! Congratulations to all of you!

  35. Lindsey says:

Danielle FTW! Love that color idea (and it’s the only one somewhat similar to my own submission, haha).

  36. Styrch says:

How do we vote? I’m not seeing a way to vote. Of course, I want to vote for my Princess Leia. :) (So honored)

  37. Mriss says:

Very disappointing :( The colors I like I can think of another polish I own that is similar and all of the rest are boring. I guess we’ll see what happens when they are mixed. But I think I’ll be skipping. No color will ever top Scrangie’s creation anyways!! *shout outs to Scrangie*

  38. beady says:

I have to thank Ji for this initiative. It is really interesting follow this process! My submission is not one of the 11 chosen ones (never expected that it would be either), but I find it really inspirational to read the others. It is so fun to se how different creative minds work, where they find their inspiration and ideas, and how they chose to present it.

My wote went to Joy who had the colors closest to my dream color. Would be fun to se Ji’s magic worked on that one…

A little PS to Jane: If your polish is not to be chosen, I think maybee you would find Barielles Aura Angora interesting.

  39. Incredible! I could not decide among three colors and after 30 minutes of indecision (!) I chose at random because I liked equally all three nuances. So I voted and… Ta-dàn! My three choices are the top three!!!

This project is fantastic! I want to say a big “BRAVO” to all participants.
I wait to see the winning inspirations. I can’t believe that you will turn them into true color.

    Best.

  40. Karen says:

Ji, I had a hard time picking from 11. I have no clue how you picked from 100s! Thanks so much for this, it was lots of fun. I hope you do it again!

  41. xm says:

trying to vote for sarah t, can’t find where to vote, help please!

  42. Mary Hall says:

Trying to vote for Sarah, Prince Leia–how can that be done on this form?

  43. Laura says:

If one doesn’t win, you should so make a copper anyway. You are so good at neutrals and a good copper would be so chic.

(Also the orange isn’t looking like it will win either, I would love an RBL orange. The formulas for oranges are always so terrible, I don’t think I own one for it being one of my favorite colors. An RBL orange would go on like a dream and not just look like a liquid Crayola crayon, ah, I can dream!)

  44. April says:

Thanks for doing this Ji! It was a noble effort on your part. But I think that most of us are so over browns and coppers. We want interesting colors not the same old same old. Most of these colors have been d-o-n-e. Just stick a fork in them. Not to mention what a hodgepodge of a collection!

Please work you magic on these colors because that is the only way that we will be able to spice them up. It looks like this time Ms. Lippmann beat you to the punch.

What a hodpge of a collection. Browns, oranges, and coppers. Not very inspiring.

    • ji ji says:

OUCH! Judgement is bit harsh don’t you think even before who wins and not viewing the colors? Thank you for this comment–now I’m going to mix three of these winners the best colors I have yet to mix! I do love a challenge..,,,

  45. Kirsten says:

Please don’t be discouraged! Some of these comments are even starting to make ME feel defensive on your behalf! They just sound so completely ungrateful and aren’t taking your mad skills into account at all! LOL. I trust your skills and know that you can turn any of these colors into something incredible and flattering. Is copper my favorite of the choices? No. Does the idea of copper polish with my pale skin scare me? YEP, but if its selected I’ll withhold judgement until you’ve worked your magic on the color. Something tells me what intrigues you most about the copper is the challenge of making a truly wearable copper which I’ve never seen done, but if anyone can do it its you! I’d avoid frost-like or typical metallic finishes since that’s where copper polishes ALWAYS go wrong. If it shows brush strokes then its time to try a different finish.

Also there’s no licensing issue with the Princess Leia idea as long as its not named something that’s directly related to Star Wars. You can hint at it though. For instance no you couldn’t name it “Princess Leia” or include any other characters/locations in the name, but you can still get the idea across without having any issues. I think its a beautiful color and I don’t think its “brown” at all. Its more burgundy/maroon/berry/plum/wine and I love the idea of that with the same shimmer from the Tudors collection. As long as its more toward the red/purple toned end of the spectrum as opposed to brown then a shade like that would be super flattering on all skin tones whether pale as a sheet like me or super dark. Personally I voted for Kaydi-Kat because it sounded the most unique and I’m a total sucker for micro-glitter, but I also loved Deborah, Sarah, Nora, Diane, Joy, and Neeta’s colors too! Its SO hard to pick just one (now I have some idea of how you felt narrowing down the HUNDREDS of submissions)! Danielle’s reminded me a little too much of Moxie except greener and grayer or OPI Not Like The Movies so I’m honestly kind of shocked by its popularity.

Regardless I feel awful for you because even though you’re not the one who makes the final decision you’ll still get blamed and get all the flack when people’s favorites aren’t chosen which is just incredibly unfair to you after allowing everyone such an amazing opportunity. A peacock feather inspired polish does sound AMAZING, but also difficult to execute because of the many different tones. Maybe a teal holo (drooling…) or a teal with Tudor-esque shimmer could capture it? Too bad about the holos issue though because I’ve always wanted to see at least one RBL holo one of these days, but I figured the reasoning was price related. My dream color is either a blurple holo (I’ve yet to even find a creme blurple that was the right balance of blue and purple/red although Mismas came closest) or emerald green holo so I’m glad I didn’t end up submitting one, but its still interesting to hear why you haven’t done any holos yet because admittedly I’ve always wondered about it. I wonder which three you would choose if you were making the final decision? I hope you’ll tell us after the voting ends just for curiosity’s sake and to compare. Anyway thanks for doing this Ji! You’re way too good to us all!

Thanks for running this competition. Its very exciting! Voted for 8 but 6 sounds great. 1 sounds interesting but the green spin put me off a bit. Ji I would love to see an amazing magenta from you. To be honest my tastes are pretty broad so I would be happy whoever one. I am not that sold on copper so it would be intersting to see you pull off something new.

  47. joker1 says:

are you serious???????? how uninspiring..we’ve seen this done before..

  48. Lindsay says:

i just wanted to echo that i appreciate you holding these fan collection competitions. commenters are sounding very ungrateful and regardless of who you chose as the finalists, i still think it’s awesome that you CHOSE to GIVE us this OPPORTUNITY at all. because you didn’t have to. i look forward to seeing whichever polish ends up being created.

  49. Siobhan says:

    Ji,
Thanks for all the work you did for this post! There are several of your picks I’d like, but there’s one which I’d particularly like to see what your interpretation would ultimately evolve into.
It’s great to be able to cast a vote and participate in creating this collection, so thanks again for the opportunity and for undertaking such a big project.

  50. Nikki says:

Y’all just need to shut up with the bitch fits and MOVE. ON. This was supposed to be FUN and the negativity and spite in the comments ON EVEN JI’S OWN BLOG is starting to reek of distaste, and making this whole thing UN-FUN.

Leave the woman alone to handle the magic. When you run a business as grueling and guerilla as hers maybe you’ll start to get a taste of how HARD IT IS TO PLEASE EVERYBODY. So you didn’t get picked. OH NOES. And for the ones who DID get picked, this is probably the best thing to happen to them ever. Maybe we should all think about THAT for a sec.

    Life goes on.

Now back to your regular scheduled manicure, which is really what us lacquerheads should care about.

really? please explain how people who do not care for the chosen colors are ungrateful and distasteful in voicing that opinion? after reading all the comments, bothj positive & negative, it didn’t seem like anyone was being particularly distasteful or disrespectful. last time i checked saying “dang, i’m disappointed in the chosen colors. i prefer other colors to copper” wasn’t a crime. i didn’t know it was now illegal to not like copper, camel or brown. how ridiculous.

  51. ji ji says:

Team jubilation–million thank you I heart you all! Team disappoint–I heart you all for giving me urge to mix my magic!

  52. Yoli says:

I can’t wait to see who wins! Good luck to everyone!

  53. Jules says:

Kaydi-kat has got it right! That sounds like it came right out of my very own creative brain :) Sounds dreamy. Crossing my fingers for you, girl!

  54. Kat says:

Rooting for blue–my entry was blue as well, although the inspiration was just my watch & alligator strap I must change out before summer. I kind of want to see an RBL orange as well, though–the SO is so in love with Hermes orange (he wanted to buy his mom the orange bolide so badly except the SA and I convinced him to go for Rouge Vif). I know you’d make something so chic and classy, but still edgy–like a glossy orange croc CDC. I can’t bring myself to buy anything orange yet, but a nail polish would be a great start!

  55. Stephanie says:

Royal blue creme with copper shimmer?!!! Just thinking about it makes me squeal in delight. Two of my favorite colors. Can’t wait!

  56. celerity says:

Am I crazy or were there really not that many coppers? Only one color was specifically copper, one was camel, and two mentioned it as a shimmer option. There were far more blue-green options. Don’t sweat it Ji – haters gonna hate. Now that I read the comments I wish I voted for a copper, which with Ji’s magic and my skin tone would be the sexiest thing ever.

Ugh these people! I’m so disappointed with them.

  57. Sirena says:

If it ends of being Kaydi-Kat, Neeta and Danielle (as the votes show now), I am probably getting all three! Those were my favorite descriptions and I can’t wait! I’m sure Ji’s creations will be even better than the descriptions.

  58. Dora says:

Definitely Deborah or, failing this, Danielle =) x

  59. JaeDee says:

So is voting closed now?? Are Danielle, Kaydi-Kat, & Neeta the final winners???

If they are, I think they’ll make a great collection together. I’d love to own them all.

    Congrats to all the finalists!!

  60. Teresa says:

Ji, I honestly think you should do a Star Wars-themed line! That was a GREAT idea (not mine). Just imagine a color called “Lightsaber”…

Also, I’m not one of the finalists and I don’t know any of them, but there are some colors that I would vote for just to have that color IN JI’S FORMULA. The camel/caramel is one of them. I’m still on the hunt for that “perfect” caramel, and I know Ji could do it. NO color is “boring” in Ji’s formula, IMO.

    • Teresa says:

Oh, and if there ARE licensing issues, just use more generic phrases. “Sword of Light,” “Little Droid,” “Goldenrod,” it wouldn’t be too hard!

  61. Lia says:

Hey Ji, you mentioned a couple days ago that one of the finalists colors kept you up all night-that’s why we had 11 instead of 10. Which one was it?

  62. Carley says:

I am so excited to see the outcome of the winning submissions. There are a couple ideas I am not crazy about, but most of them I totally love and I can’t wait to see how you interpret the winners, Ji!

I think it is remarkable that you decided to do this contest, and I think the naysayers should hold their tongues until they see the finished results. What did they want? A bunch of holos and duochromes that have been done before?

Good on you for this awesome project, Ji.

  63. Danielle says:

Is the voting over? If so WOW!! Thank you so much Ji for such a fun and exciting opportunity and to everyone who voted form me! Congrats to the finalists also, these were some amazing ideas!

  64. Mixolidia says:

Isn’t number 11 too much like Barielle’s Falling Star. It’s a bright blue with cooper glitter (see this picture from All Lacquered Up – http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8D5qVf5VMxs/SluJbtzuqEI/AAAAAAAAHaE/heku_43M3QM/s1600-h/barielle-falling-star-all-lacquered-up-collection-nail-polish.jpg . It’s the first thing I thought of when I saw the mask & it was reinforced by the description. Barielle also has a light blue & coppery red glitter one called June Bug. It’s gonna be tricky trying not to make a dupe. I’ve seen that brigh blue copper liquid with the copper flecks & Falling Star kinda nailed it.

    • Lauren says:

That’s definitely a good call as far as the two colors being combined, but as you said, that’s glitter not shimmer. Ji’s will be so much better.

  65. R says:

If the top 5 were done, I would buy all of them!

  66. Sandi says:

None of them jumps out at me. The Leia maybe, if it was done properly and actually burgundy and not a muddied red brown.

  67. Nancy says:

Wow, Im suprised by all the negative comments! Personally I think that holding a contests and having the people chose the colors is something amazing that not many other companies do. Ji, you are amazing and extremely talented. I am always wowed by RBL nail polishes.
Many people are commenting about the copper color as “not unique” and “has been done already” but you can’t judge a polish by its base color, because then every color would have already “been done.” I honestly am looking forward to see how the copper color is going to look like, I thought the idea was really unique. I have never seen a nail polish with blue and copper. Anyways, don’t get discouraged by all the negative comments, I am completely sure that they will be a great success! I myself am planning on buying all 3 polishes! Maybe I am just really open minded, but I loved the descriptions to the three winners and am really looking forward to seeing them. I hope in the future you will hold more of these contests.
